In 1963 he attended the Preparative Section to enrol at the degree on Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, degree he concluded in 1968. Between 1971 and 1973 he got a post-graduate degree at the Saint Martin’s School of Fine Arts (London), having returned to Portugal and to his life as a teacher. Zulmiro de Carvalho’s sculptural work derives from a careful drawing, is executed by skilful technicians and is characterised by simplicity, sobriety and greatness of his structures, in iron, bronze and steel, materials that he later combined with marble, slate and wood.
