Pedro Calapez

Portuguese plastic artist (1953), he attended the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and stated himself as a painter in the first half of the 80’s. Calapez embarked on a journey marked by a methodical rigor in which drawing is the founding practise. Producing paintings through incision, proximate to the engraving tradition, the author is interested mainly in the pictorial/architectural treatment of space. Architecture is one of the organisational references of Calapez’ work, but this architecture, scratched on the surface of support, presents us paths, façades, or escape points that contradict themselves, creating improbable landscapes. From the 90’s on he developed a new line of work. The attraction to textures and to the creation of landscapes manifests now through the more and more agile practise of an abstract painting that delights on the pleasures of the exercise of applying inks and of the management of the colour games.
