Plastic artist, Maria José Aguiar was born in 1948, in Barcelos. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto where, later, she started lecturing. He held his first individual exhibition in 1973, at the Galeria Alvarez, Oporto. Maria José Aguiar is an artist who assumes a primary connection with a brutal vision in all elements that constitute the used pictorial language. In her painting, impulse is a method of expressing herself, of manifesting the own being, exalting her woman desires in a direct and abrupt way. The elements of the language that she puts in confrontation are the ones revealed in instinctive execution. It is a physical painting where there is no place to intellectualization. Sex is a constant theme in her work, as well as the use of quotation from other artists, notably in the pieces she named camouflages, after 1981.
