José Rodrigues

Sculptor, drawer and engraver, José Rodrigues was born in Angola, in 1936. He attended the degree on Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, having graduated with an average of 20, thus joining the group of the “Four Twenties” (all of them graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto with an average of 20). Besides sculpture, he also dedicated himself to illustrating books, executing ceramic medals and to set design, cooperating with several theatre groups in Portugal and Spain. Today he is considered one of the biggest names of the Portuguese Plastic Arts. His artworks, especially in public space, always created controversy. In 2008, the Sculptor José Rodrigues Foundation was opened in the space of the denominated “Social Factory”.
