Fernando Lanhas (detail)

Fernando Lanhas

Portuguese painter and architect (1923-2012), he is considered as the introducer of the geometric abstractionism in Portugal.  All his work is characterised by a styling unit, given by the usual usage of tense and broken lines, sometimes, in parallel. The perspective, in which are organised stains of warm and cool colours, plane or textured, combined with lines in perspective, is revealed as the most important. The chromatic range used, in a scale of ochres and greys, remembers the colours of certain minerals, sometimes used as the pigment itself. The lines of large and almost mechanical stroke structure the perceptual field, limiting areas and assuming the function of signs. Moreover, he developed a scientific activity in the fields of anthropology and ethnography, having been the director of the Oporto’s Museum of Ethnography.
